About me

website picture 2.jpg

Over the past 15 years I have worked with people from all walks of life facing many different issues in their lives. I have experience working with emotion regulation, substance use, separation, relationships and life transitions. I am a registered clinical counsellor with the Psychotherapy & Counselling Federation of Australia.

With a trade background, and 6 years of tertiary study in mental health, I am equipped with a range of unique skills and experiences. A male therapist can help other men with a shared understanding of societal expectations and pressures faced by men. People with relationship issues can gain insight from the male perspective to help them understand positive male behaviour.

I have a special interest in the concept of 'antifragility' and its relevance to trauma recovery. I have an extensive background working within the mental health 'recovery' model of care, which advocates for living one's best life alongside experiencing mental illness. I also have an interest in existential therapy which explores the fundamental aspects of human existence such as freedom, responsibility, death, free will, self-determination, and the search for meaning.

I can provide education and supervision to other mental health professionals around 'recovery' oriented practice included in NDIS service provision. I am a registered EAP provider.

FAQ

How does therapy work?

Counselling is a type of talk therapy whereby I meet with you and work through your presenting issues in a safe and confidential environment. You might discuss past, current or future difficulties.

Counselling does not involve judgment on the part of the counsellor. It is rather a partnership wherein the counsellor helps the person explore their difficulties using validation, reflection, understanding and interpretation. Counselling helps identify solutions or ways forward. It is a joint effort, one that can serve to help with a large array of problems ranging from addiction, abuse, relationships, communication, stress and emotion regulation.

What happens in session?

The first session is focused on broadly understanding your reasons for seeking support and what you would like to gain. Following this, we will explore thoughts, emotions and behaviours and how they serve you currently.
Counsellors don’t diagnose, or follow a script, rather you will be supported to explore what's meaningful and relevant for you.

For example, you may want to understand yourself better, develop strategies or work towards goals.

Do you provide health insurance rebates, mental health treatment plans or NDIS services?

Private Health - no

NDIS - yes (plan and self managed only)

EAP - yes

Medicare - no

Payment and cancellation

Payment is 24 hours prior to your session. If you need to cancel that's fine, cancellations with less than 24 hours prior to your appointment the full fee will apply. However, changing an appointment time or day can usually be accommodated for or changed to video based. The benefit of video-based counselling is that I can provide a range of flexible days and times.

My Approach

My approach is person centred, humanistic and solution focused. The format of our work is flexible whereby you get to decide the content you bring, and pace at which we move through the therapeutic process.  This can include struggles with everyday living, or a longer term searches for meaning, purpose and identity.

At the core of all counselling work is helping you to be truly understood and have your experience validated. People often enter therapy not understanding how or why they feel a certain way. By listening, reflecting, identifying patterns and interpreting different ways of relating to oneself emotional pain can be relieved.

If you are seeking a more specialised treatment for anxiety and depression the gold standard evidence-based treatment is Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which i can offer. CBT is a type of psychotherapy that helps people learn how to identify and change unhelpful or problematic thought patterns that have a undesirable influence on their lives.

Couples can enter counselling for a number reasons

including betrayal, relationship repair, improving connection/understanding, trust, intimacy and communication. Counselling typically focuses on the dynamics within the relationship rather than an individual.

I do offer services to NDIS participants, including counselling and recovery coaching. I offer limited recovery coaching places (waitlist) to those with functional impairment and co occurring BPD, EUPD diagnoses.

The best way to work out if I am the right therapist for you is to book an initial session or just get in touch for a quick chat.
